The 100-Square Life

One square for every year of a 100-year life. Financial planners use this to make time feel real. We use it to answer the only question that matters in a property decision: why move now, not later?

You are
Your current age
59years
Planned retirement age
67years
If you wait before moving
0years
12
Active, healthy years left
The years you'll actually get to live well in the right home.
59
Years already lived
22
Years to life expectancy
7
Of them spent asleep

Your life, one square per year

Average life expectancy shown for an Australian male: 81
Already lived Active & awake ahead Later, slower years Asleep Lost to waiting Beyond life expectancy Retirement

Where your remaining years actually go

The same logic a financial planner runs on your money — run on your time instead.

Sleep
Awake & active
Slower years
7 yrs asleep (≈8 hrs/day) 8 yrs awake & active 10 yrs slower / reduced health

The window is smaller than it feels

So the real question isn't “can we time the market perfectly?” It's “how many of these good years are we willing to spend waiting?”

Assumptions & sources
Life expectancy: Australian Bureau of Statistics, Life Tables 2022–2024 — 81.1 years for males, 85.1 years for females (life expectancy at birth, national).

Active & healthy years: estimated from the ABS / AIHW measure of the proportion of life lived in full health (≈88% for males, ≈86% for females). The "later, slower years" band represents the average gap between healthy-life expectancy and total life expectancy — it is not a prediction about any individual.

Sleep: assumes ≈8 hours per day, roughly one-third of waking life.

These are population averages used to make time tangible, not a forecast of your own lifespan or health, and not financial, legal or medical advice. Many people live longer, healthier and more active lives than the averages — the point is simply that the active window is finite, and waiting spends it.
